Lucas isn't having the best summer. While he would usually be away at camp, this year he's stuck at home, watching over his younger neighbor Noah and mourning the loss of his beloved cat. Even going outside seems dangerous due to mysterious fires that have made the air unsafe to breathe. Noah claims these fires are the work of real-life dragons. At first, Lucas laughs it off—after all, Noah's dad has always been fond of conspiracy theories. But when Noah's family suddenly flees town, Lucas realizes he must uncover the truth.
Meanwhile, young Cinder and her dragon herd are just trying to survive in a strange new world. They’ve found a haven high in the mountains, hoping to finally live in peace. However, when Cinder suffers a terrible fall, she fears she may not live long enough to see that dream come true.
In the midst of his search for dragons, Lucas stumbles upon Cinder, and he can't help but feel compassion for this tiny creature. Together, they begin to form an unlikely friendship. But a simple misunderstanding between scales and skin is all it takes to ignite a worldwide inferno. As the dragon apocalypse looms, can Lucas and Cinder find a way to keep their families safe?
